Scope & Content |
Handwritten minutes of the meetings of the Vestry for the parish of St. John, Barbados for the period March 25, 1829 to March 25, 1863. Content is carried on pages numbered 1-177 with each number representing two pages e.g. 1l and 1r. The minutes for each meeting consist of the names of the persons in attendance and the business transacted. Informations includes: the names of persons receiving poor relief and the amount; slave labour for highway maintenance; maintenance of the church; levy payments; parochial school affairs; members of the school committee; taxes to be paid by named tradesmen and shopkeepers; church matters including repairs to the rectory; certificates to leave the island granted to inhabitants of St. John; militia; salaries of Vestry employees; provisions for St. Mark's Chapel; aid to the General Hospital; memorial tablet to the late Edmund Haynes; public health and sanitation; payment to widows under provisions of the will of J.H. Massiah; payments to named pensioners; instructions for the disposal of the dead and fumigation of houses during the cholera epidemic; aid for the proposed Scripture Readers' Association; petition to the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council seeking assistance for the Rector who was suffering from "senior's illness." |
