A manuscript containing ledger and journal entries for the period 1818-1844 that document purchases and sales, as well as expenses for Colleton Plantation, St. John, Barbados. Arranged by year, month and date, yearly transactions include: the estate of Charles G. Colleton, including accounts receivable from named individuals such as R. Harris and R. Collymore; details of sugar shipped to Liverpool, London and Bristol; transactions with companies such as Thomas Daniel & Co and estates such as Society; the production of rum, sugar and molasses; births within the enslaved population, including the names of mothers and offspring, as well as names of deceased enslaved persons and the cause of death. The ledger consists of a total of 441 pages numbered to 221 (each page being equivalent to two pages, left and right; e.g. 1l, 1r). Pages 182r, 183l, 211l, 212l, 212r, 213l and 213r are missing. John Colleton, later Sir John Colleton, bart., arrived in Barbados in 1650 and pieced together this large plantation by several purchases. By a Deed made in 1666. Sir John Colleton made a settlement of 2 plantations - one in St. Peter and one in St. John on his 4 sons - Peter, John, James and Thomas. Source: Hughes/Queree Files, BMHS |
