Scope & Content |
Handwritten minutes of the meetings of the Vestry for the parish of St. John, Barbados, for the period 1792-1820, with the first entry dated April 4, 1792. For each meeting the names and positions of the vestrymen present are noted, as well as the business conducted. Vestry business included: plans for the School of Female Industry, including the names of the scholars; poor relief payments to named individuals and amounts paid; taxes payable by named hucksters; house repairs; payment of salaries of parish staff; subscription of produce or money for the war effort; repair of highways, including use of slave labour for highway repair; subscription for new organ; named male and female vestry scholars; allocation of church pews; manumission fees; donation from the estate of Joseph Barrow for distribution to the poor as well as other donations to the parish. |
